In the late summer of 2014, the community of Newport News, Virginia, was shaken by the violent and untimely death of 16-year-old Bryant Maurice Wilder Jr. A lifelong resident of the city and a rising junior at Warwick High School, he was known for his love of music, fishing, and skateboarding. His life, full of promise, was cut tragically short in the predawn hours of August 14th.
On that Thursday morning, at approximately 1:30 a.m., the sound of gunshots echoed near Saunders Elementary
School. When police arrived, they discovered a grim scene in the school's parking lot. Near the basketball courts lay the bodies of Bryant Wilder Jr. and another teenager, 17-year-old John A. Nieves Jr., both students at Warwick High School. A third teenager was found injured nearby, having managed to call 911 for help. Both Wilder and Nieves were pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the double homicide moved swiftly. Later that same day, police arrested a 17-year-old suspect, David James Hosley. According to court documents and witness accounts, Hosley used a 12-gauge shotgun to commit the murders. The motive for the shooting was not publicly disclosed. It was revealed that Hosley had a prior criminal record.
In the wake of the tragedy, David James Hosley was charged with two counts of second-degree murder and use of a firearm. The case proceeded through the legal system, and in February 2015, a grand jury indicted Hosley on the serious charges related to the deaths of Bryant Wilder Jr. and John Nieves Jr. The incident left a lasting scar on the Newport News community, a stark reminder of the devastating impact of youth and gun violence.
