In the early hours of a summer night in Portsmouth, Virginia, tragedy struck 28-year-old Robert E. Artis, Jr. On June 1, 2019, a shooting erupted in the 1100 block of Mt. Vernon Avenue, forever altering the lives of many. When the sound of gunfire subsided, four people were left with serious injuries. Emergency services were called to the scene around 1 a.m., and all four victims were rushed to a local hospital. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Robert E.
Artis, Jr., a male, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The other three victims were treated for serious injuries.
In the days that followed the fatal shooting, the Portsmouth Police Department launched an investigation to bring those responsible to justice. Their efforts led them to identify two suspects in the case. Warrants were issued for the arrest of 21-year-old Tyquan R. Anderson and 23-year-old Eric A. Hoskins. On June 11, a coordinated effort between the U.S. Marshals and the Virginia Beach Police Department Fugitive and SWAT teams resulted in the apprehension of Hoskins in Virginia Beach. He was charged with aggravated malicious wounding and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
Later that same day, the second suspect, Tyquan R. Anderson, was located and apprehended in Chesapeake. U.S. Marshals, with the assistance of the Chesapeake Police Department Criminal Apprehension Unit, took him into custody in the 2700 block of Conrad Avenue. Anderson faced a series of charges, including first-degree murder for the death of Robert E. Artis, Jr. His other charges included aggravated malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Following their arrests, both Hoskins and Anderson were handed over to the Portsmouth Sheriff's Office.
