In a quiet Burke, Virginia neighborhood, a domestic disturbance escalated into a tragic and violent event, leaving three family members dead in its wake. The life of 19-year-old Sean Patrick Bailes was cut short on October 21, 2019, when he was shot and killed by his cousin, Marcellus William Bounds IV. The incident, which unfolded on Wicklow Drive, also claimed the life of Bounds' 67-year-old mother, Patricia Marie Bounds.
The evening began with a frantic 911 call from a woman reporting that a family member was threatening her with a gun. As the situation inside the home deteriorated, another family member managed to escape and get help. When Fairfax County Police officers arrived at the scene around 9:11 p.m., they were met with gunfire from Marcellus Bounds, who was armed with a shotgun. Two officers sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the exchange.
Following the initial confrontation, Bounds barricaded himself inside the residence, leading to a prolonged standoff. The police department's Special Operations Division, including a SWAT team, responded to the hostage-barricade event. Attempts to negotiate with Bounds were unsuccessful. After several hours, the SWAT team breached the home by smashing front windows to gain entry.
Once inside, officers made a grim discovery. They found Sean Patrick Bailes and his grandmother, Patricia Marie Bounds, dead in separate rooms from apparent gunshot wounds. The investigation later revealed that during the argument, both victims had fled to different parts of the house to escape the gunman. Bounds shot his mother in a bedroom and then found and shot his nephew, Sean, in a bathroom. The suspect, 36-year-old Marcellus William Bounds IV, was also found deceased inside the home from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. An investigation confirmed that the incident was a murder-suicide stemming from an ongoing family issue.
