On the evening of December 1, 2019, in Richmond, Virginia, 17-year-old J-mari R. Saunders was fatally shot in the city's Mosby Court neighborhood. Officers responded to reports of a shooting in the 2000 block of Accommodation Street at approximately 7:02 p.m. and found the male teenager with a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries and died several hours later.
Friends and family remembered J-mari as a funny and cool young man who aspired to become a U.S. Marine.
The investigation determined that J-mari was an innocent victim caught in the crossfire of gang-related violence. The person responsible for his death was identified as Travis Thomas, a teenage gang member who was also implicated in the murder of 28-year-old Antonio Brown, Jr. in March of the following year.
Ultimately, the case against Travis Thomas concluded with a plea agreement, reportedly due to concerns about the reliability of witness testimonies. Thomas was sentenced to 25 years in prison for the murders of both J-mari Saunders and Antonio Brown. The resolution of the case brought a sense of frustration for J-mari's mother, who expressed her devastation over the plea deal. She described Thomas as a remorseless killer and felt that the sentence did not represent true justice for her son's life being senselessly cut short.
