On the evening of September 23, 2022, Jonathan O. Fitzgerald, a 40-year-old Black male from Richmond, Virginia, was fatally shot outside the S&M Deli Convenience Store in the 400 block of E. Laburnum Avenue in Henrico County. The incident prompted multiple 911 calls just after 8:45 p.m. reporting the shooting. When Henrico Police arrived at the scene, they discovered Fitzgerald with a gunshot wound to his head.
He was pronounced dead at the location.
The investigation into the death of Fitzgerald, who was known to some by the nicknames '8 OG Gotti,' 'Big Gotti,' and 'Jon Jon,' quickly became a homicide case. Henrico Police sought assistance from the community, urging anyone with information to come forward and utilize anonymous tip lines through Crime Stoppers or the P3Tips website. The authorities worked to piece together the events that led to the violent encounter outside the convenience store.
A significant development in the case came on October 28, 2022, when two 18-year-olds from Henrico County were arrested in connection with the murder. The suspects were identified as Lavar Anderson Jr. and Joseph Quarles Yates III. Both individuals were charged with conspiracy to commit murder, first-degree murder, and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Following their arrests, the legal proceedings against Anderson and Yates commenced, with both facing the possibility of lengthy prison sentences if convicted of the serious charges.
