In the winter of 2020, the life of 18-year-old Katrez Tyreese Bryant was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire. On the evening of Monday, February 17, police officers on patrol in Richmond, Virginia's Gilpin Court neighborhood heard gunshots ring out around 5:40 p.m. Responding to the sound, they discovered Bryant on the second-floor landing of an apartment building in the 200 block of West Charity Street, suffering from gunshot wounds.
He was rushed to a local hospital, but his injuries proved fatal, and he died later that evening.
Katrez, known affectionately as 'Boogie' to his family and friends, was born in Richmond on March 29, 2001. He was educated in the Richmond Public Schools, attending John Marshall High School and later earning his GED. Friends and family remembered him as a young man full of hope and joy, with a passion for sports, especially his beloved Redskins football team.
Less than two weeks after the shooting, on February 27, 2020, the Richmond Police Department announced the arrests of two suspects in connection with Bryant's death. Melvin M. Davis, 26, and Kahlil J. Pryor, 24, were taken into custody. Both men were charged with conspiracy to commit murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. The arrests brought a swift, though incomplete, sense of resolution to a community shaken by the violent loss of a young life.
