On the evening of April 30, 2016, a tragic event unfolded in the courtyard of the Richmond Inn and Suites on Midlothian Turnpike in Richmond, Virginia. Wayne M. Smith Jr., a 34-year-old male, was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The incident occurred around 6:15 p.m., a time when the motel courtyard should have been a place of transient peace but was instead shattered by the sound of what witnesses described as three loud explosions.
