In the early evening of January 2, 2019, shots rang out in the 100 block of West Brookland Park Boulevard in Richmond, Virginia, forever altering the lives of two families. When police arrived at approximately 4:24 p.m., they discovered 18-year-old James Moorehead suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound. The young man, whose last known address was on Cliff Avenue, was rushed to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be too severe, and he succumbed to them later that evening.
James, a student and running back for Thomas Jefferson High School, had dreams of attending Virginia Union University. His life, full of promise and athletic ambition, was cut tragically short. The Medical Examiner would later confirm the cause and manner of his death. The incident marked the second homicide in the city of Richmond in the first two days of the new year.
Shortly after Moorehead was found, another young man, 19-year-old Kelvontae K. Davis of Henrico, arrived at a local hospital in a private vehicle, also suffering from a gunshot wound. His injury, however, was not considered life-threatening. An investigation into the shooting on West Brookland Park Boulevard quickly led detectives to connect the two events. Following their investigation, authorities arrested Davis and charged him with voluntary manslaughter in the shooting of James Moorehead.
