The events of March 8, 2020, unfolded around 9 p.m. in the Rusty Blackhaw Square area, where deputies from the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, they discovered a grim scene: two young men suffering from serious injuries. Gray was found in the street, while another individual, later identified as 18-year-old Bryce T. Thomas of Sterling, was located inside a nearby residence. Both were transported to the hospital, but Gray succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.
Investigators determined that the shooting was the result of what they described as a 'drug deal gone bad.' The incident began with a meeting arranged by a woman who arrived with Gray to meet Thomas. A physical altercation erupted between the two men, which quickly escalated to gunfire. In the exchange of fire, both Gray and Thomas were shot. The woman who had arranged the meeting fled the scene during the chaos but was later located and interviewed by authorities.
While the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office identified everyone involved in the incident, the investigation led to charges against Thomas that did not include murder. He was arrested on March 31, 2020, and charged with felony possession with intent to distribute marijuana and possessing a firearm while an adjudicated delinquent. At the time of the announcement of these charges, the Loudoun Commonwealth's Attorney stated that there were 'theories that have led us to charge the case as it has been charged,' and that the investigation into why someone was killed would continue. Thomas was held without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center.
