VanTerry Maurice Fields, a 50-year-old Black male, was fatally shot on the evening of August 27, 2020, in Richmond, Virginia. The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. at a 7-Eleven convenience store situated at the intersection of Chamberlayne Avenue and Azalea Avenue. When Richmond Police officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Fields suffering from gunshot wounds.
Despite emergency medical efforts, he was pronounced dead at the location.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led to a suspect, 49-year-old Craig Maryland. According to authorities, Fields and Maryland were acquainted with one another, and the shooting was the culmination of a physical altercation between the two men. The fight escalated, resulting in Maryland allegedly shooting Fields. The day after the fatal encounter, Maryland was taken into custody by law enforcement.
Following his arrest, Craig Maryland was charged with second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. During his arraignment, a magistrate denied him bail. The court appointed an attorney to represent Maryland, who was informed of the option to file a bond motion at a later date. A subsequent court appearance for Maryland was scheduled for November 17, 2020, as the legal proceedings in the case against him commenced.
