On a Monday afternoon, September 14, 2020, the life of 22-year-old Darius Stanyon Brown was tragically cut short in Newport News, Virginia. Around 4:15 p.m., Newport News Police were called to the scene of a shooting on Warwick Boulevard. Upon their arrival, they discovered Brown with a life-threatening gunshot wound. He was rushed to a local hospital, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after.
Darius, born on March 2, 1998, in Prince George's County, Maryland, had moved
to Newport News in 2011. He was a 2016 graduate of Woodside High School and had continued his education at Thomas Nelson Community College, where he played basketball. Described as having a fierce loyalty and a big heart, his unexpected death prevented him from realizing his dreams.
The investigation into the shooting that claimed Darius Brown's life continued for over a month without any publicly identified suspects. Then, in October 2020, a breakthrough in the case led to the arrest of 27-year-old Phillip Evan Jones, a resident of Newport News. Jones was taken into custody and subsequently charged with second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony in connection with Darius Brown's death. The arrest brought a sense of potential closure to a community shaken by the violent loss of a young life.
