In the summer of 2021, a dispute over a bicycle in Chesapeake, Virginia, escalated into a tragic act of violence that claimed the life of 45-year-old Phillip A. Scott Sr., a Black male. The incident unfolded on the evening of July 1st in the 1200 block of Seaboard Avenue, where an argument between a friend of another victim and a man accompanied by two juveniles took a fatal turn.
The altercation reportedly began over the ownership of a bicycle.
As tensions mounted, the unidentified man is said to have brandished a firearm, initially firing shots into the air. The confrontation then moved to a nearby alley. It was at this point that both Phillip A. Scott Sr. and 26-year-old John Raymond Caldarera were shot. In addition to the two fatalities, a male and a female juvenile were also wounded in the shooting.
John Raymond Caldarera was pronounced dead at the scene. Phillip A. Scott Sr. was transported to a local hospital with what were initially reported as non-life-threatening injuries. However, his condition worsened, and he succumbed to his wounds on July 4, 2021.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, witnesses reported seeing a man being led away from the scene in handcuffs. However, the Chesapeake Police Department has not publicly identified any suspects or announced any arrests in connection with the deaths of Phillip A. Scott Sr. and John Raymond Caldarera. The investigation into the double homicide remains ongoing, leaving a community searching for answers and justice for the two men whose lives were cut short by a senseless act of violence. The case is now considered a cold case, and authorities continue to appeal to the public for any information that might lead to a resolution.
