On an afternoon in late April of 2020, a sense of normalcy was shattered at a bus transfer stop in Chesapeake, Virginia. Taekwon Demond Rumble, a 22-year-old Black male, was seated on a Hampton Roads Transit bus on Liberty Street, waiting for it to depart. It was around 5:20 p.m. on April 28th when the ordinary scene turned tragic. Another young man boarded the bus, produced a firearm, and opened fire, striking Rumble multiple times.
The sudden eruption of violence left passengers in shock and claimed the life of the young Chesapeake resident.
The gunman, identified as 20-year-old Tyrek Deangelo Jones, fled the scene on foot, disappearing into a nearby neighborhood. The Chesapeake Police Department launched an immediate and intensive investigation. Detectives worked through the night and into the next day, gathering evidence and interviewing the approximately ten witnesses who were on the bus at the time of the shooting. Their efforts quickly bore fruit, as they were able to identify Jones as the primary suspect in the fatal shooting.
Less than 24 hours after the incident, on April 29, 2020, officers with the Chesapeake Police Department located and arrested Tyrek Deangelo Jones. He was taken into custody without incident and subsequently charged with first-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. As the legal process began to unfold, Jones was appointed an attorney to represent him in the criminal proceedings. While an arrest was made swiftly, the motive behind the shooting remained unclear to the public as the investigation continued.
