In the late summer of 2021, a workplace dispute in Windsor, Virginia, tragically escalated, ending the life of 26-year-old Rakim Breedin. The fatal encounter occurred on September 23 at the Safco Products warehouse, where Breedin was a temporary employee. An initial altercation between Breedin and a coworker, Preston Kyle Thomas, took a violent turn. After their first confrontation, Thomas left the premises and returned with a handgun.
A second altercation ensued, during which Thomas shot Breedin. Emergency services were called to the scene, but Breedin succumbed to his injuries while en route to the hospital.
Following the shooting, Preston Kyle Thomas, then 23, fled the scene. Law enforcement officials identified him as the suspect and launched a search. His vehicle was later found at an apartment complex in Carrollton, but Thomas was not immediately located. Authorities publicly identified Thomas and warned that he should be considered armed and dangerous. He was initially charged with second-degree murder for the death of Rakim Breedin.
Preston Kyle Thomas was eventually brought to trial for his role in Rakim Breedin's death. During the legal proceedings, the jury considered the evidence presented, including the circumstances of the workplace altercation that led to the fatal shooting. Ultimately, the jury convicted Thomas of a lesser charge, voluntary manslaughter. In October 2023, the court sentenced him to ten years of incarceration for the crime. Thomas later appealed his conviction, arguing that the trial court erred by refusing a specific jury instruction regarding self-defense. However, the appeal was not successful, and the higher court affirmed the initial judgment.
