In the small community of Naola, Virginia, the tranquility was shattered on September 15, 1987, by a brutal act of violence that claimed the life of 13-year-old Joel Jerry “JJ” Buchanan. This young boy was one of four family members tragically killed in a massacre carried out by his own half-brother, Douglas McArthur Buchanan Jr. The horrific events unfolded at the Buchanan family home, nestled near the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway.
The architect of this devastation, Douglas Jr.,
harbored deep-seated resentment towards his family, feeling alienated and mistreated. This animosity culminated in a pre-meditated attack. He first murdered his 43-year-old father, Douglas Buchanan Sr., and his younger brother, Christopher Donald 'Donnie' Buchanan, who was only 10. As JJ attempted to flee the unfolding horror, his half-brother shot him in the back. Douglas Jr. then brought the wounded boy back inside the house, only to shoot him again and stab him multiple times. The carnage continued when he lay in wait for his 31-year-old stepmother, Geraldine Patterson Buchanan, and killed her upon her return home.
Following the murders, Douglas Jr. and his wife, Christianne Marie Buchanan, fled the state, sparking a manhunt that ended with their apprehension in New Mexico 17 days later. Douglas Jr. was subsequently tried and convicted of capital murder for the slayings of his father, stepmother, and two half-brothers. He was sentenced to death. His wife, Christianne, was also held accountable for her part in the crimes, receiving four life sentences for being an accessory to first-degree murder.
The legal battle that followed spanned a decade, with Douglas Jr.'s defense team filing multiple appeals. They argued that his troubled upbringing should have been a mitigating factor in his sentencing. These appeals, however, were ultimately unsuccessful, and the U.S. Supreme Court affirmed his guilt. On March 18, 1998, Douglas McArthur Buchanan Jr. was executed by lethal injection at the Greensville Correctional Center.
