In the quiet mountain community of Naola, Virginia, a family tragedy unfolded on September 15, 1987, resulting in the death of 43-year-old Douglas McArthur Buchanan Sr. This violent episode, born from years of simmering resentment, would ultimately claim four lives and lead to a capital murder conviction.
The architect of this horrific event was the victim's own son, Douglas McArthur Buchanan Jr. On that fateful afternoon, years of feeling like an outcast in his own family, especially after his father's remarriage following his mother's death, reached a boiling point. An argument with his father, during which his deceased mother was insulted, became the catalyst for an explosion of violence. Armed with a rifle, a pistol, and a knife, the younger Buchanan began a methodical and brutal assault on his family.
His father, Douglas Buchanan Sr., was shot in the back of the head and between the eyes. The rampage did not end there. Douglas Jr. then turned his fury on his two half-brothers, 13-year-old Joel and 10-year-old Donnie, shooting them as well. When one of the boys got up, he was stabbed multiple times. The final victim was his 31-year-old stepmother, Geraldine Patterson Buchanan. After his initial attempt to shoot her failed when the pistol misfired, a second shot grazed her head. He then proceeded to stab her repeatedly.
Following the murders, Douglas Jr. and his wife, Christianne Marie Buchanan, fled the state and were apprehended 17 days later in New Mexico. Douglas Jr. confessed to the killings, citing years of mistreatment as his motive. He was subsequently tried and convicted of capital murder for the quadruple homicide. The jury sentenced him to death. His wife, Christianne, was also found to have played a role in the crime, having conspired with her husband prior to the murders. She was convicted of four counts of being an accessory to first-degree murder and received four life sentences.
After a decade of legal battles and appeals, which included a landmark U.S. Supreme Court case regarding jury instructions on mitigating evidence, Douglas McArthur Buchanan Jr.'s fate was sealed. On March 18, 1998, at the age of 29, he was executed by lethal injection at the Greensville Correctional Center.
