On a Sunday in Suffolk, Virginia, the life of 21-year-old Jason Javon Lewis of Portsmouth was cut short by gunfire. The fatal shooting occurred on November 28, 2021, in the 1100 block of Cogic Square. Another man, Kareem Jamal Hunter, was also seriously injured in the incident.
The Suffolk Police Department's investigation into the shooting led to the identification and arrest of three suspects.
One of the men injured in the shooting, 24-year-old Kareem Jamal Hunter of Suffolk, was later charged in connection with Lewis's death after being released from the hospital. He faced charges including first-degree murder, shooting from a vehicle, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
A second suspect, 21-year-old Dennis Whitehead of Suffolk, turned himself in to the authorities. Whitehead was charged with a similar slate of offenses, including first-degree murder and shooting at an occupied vehicle. The third individual sought by police, 21-year-old Latrawn Armstrong, also of Suffolk, was initially considered armed and dangerous. He surrendered to law enforcement on December 6, 2021, and was charged with first-degree murder and other related offenses. All three men were held at the Western Tidewater Regional Jail as the investigation continued.
