Darrell Lamont Knight Jr., a 26-year-old Black man, was a graduate of Lakeland High School's class of 2016, where he had been a football player. He was also known as a loving caretaker for his grandfather. On the evening of May 9, 2024, his life was cut short in the 1300 block of Blythewood Lane in his hometown of Suffolk, Virginia. Police responded to a call of shots fired just after 6:30 p.m. and discovered Knight suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The Suffolk Police Department's investigation into the homicide quickly identified two suspects. Warrants were issued for 24-year-old Amir Rassein Knight, the victim's own brother, and 27-year-old Khalil Malik McGlone. Both men were charged with Attempted Malicious Wounding and Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony. Investigators believed that multiple people were present at the scene of the shooting and publicly asked for any witnesses to come forward with information.
Weeks after the shooting, a significant development occurred in the case. On June 4, 2024, Amir Rassein Knight turned himself in to the Suffolk Police Department. Later that same month, the second suspect, Khalil Malik McGlone, was also taken into custody and charged.
With both suspects arrested, the case is proceeding through the court system as of June 2024. Authorities have not released details about the circumstances or motive that led to the fatal shooting.
