On May 5, 2023, 20-year-old Ketron Exavier Smith was fatally shot while working as a clerk at a 7-Eleven store located in the 800 block of Carolina Road in Suffolk, Virginia. According to the Suffolk Police Department, two unidentified suspects entered the store around 12:38 a.m., immediately opened fire on Smith, and then fled the scene without taking any money or merchandise. Smith sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.
