In the quiet woods near Butte Falls, Oregon, the life of Dick Laurence Zoomer Daniels, a 33-year-old White/Caucasian male, came to a sudden and violent end on the evening of October 12, 2016. Daniels, a machinist who enjoyed riding dirt bikes and fishing, was at the center of a fatal confrontation at a campsite.

The incident unfolded around 8 p.m. when a couple, Shane Young and Mariah Silviera, arrived at their campsite. Daniels, who reportedly had a prior history with Silviera involving a dispute over a truck, had been dropped off near the location and had set up a concealed position overlooking the camp. As Young and Silviera returned in their truck, Daniels emerged from the woods armed with a pistol and a flashlight.

He began firing at Shane Young, who exited the vehicle and used it for cover. As Daniels searched for him with the flashlight, at one point climbing onto the truck's rear bumper to get a better vantage point, Silviera managed to retrieve a rifle from inside their truck and hand it to Young. From a concealed position near the open passenger door, Young fired twice, striking Daniels and killing him at the scene.

Investigators later found a scoped rifle in the area where Daniels had been hiding. The Jackson County District Attorney's Office investigated the shooting and ultimately ruled that Shane Young had acted in self-defense and the shooting was justified. Consequently, no arrests were made in connection with the death of Dick Laurence Zoomer Daniels.
