On a cold December day in Newport News, Virginia, the life of 24-year-old Michael Anthony Neblett was tragically cut short. Known affectionately as 'Neb' to his friends and family, Michael was a passionate skateboarder who was a beloved figure in his community. On December 23, 2021, he was found in the 300 block of Roseman Court with a fatal gunshot wound.
Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, he succumbed to his injuries, leaving a void in the hearts of those who knew him.
The investigation into Michael's death revealed a story of a prearranged meeting that turned deadly. He had planned to sell marijuana to a 17-year-old named Essonie 'Soni' Lennon. However, the transaction took a violent turn when Lennon attempted to rob Michael at gunpoint. It is believed that when Michael reached for his own firearm, Lennon shot him. A witness was able to identify Lennon from a photo lineup, which led to his arrest just a few days after the fatal encounter.
In July 2024, Essonie Lennon stood trial and was convicted by a jury of first-degree murder, attempted robbery, abduction, shooting into an occupied vehicle, and several other related charges. The court learned of Lennon's extensive criminal history, which included 26 run-ins with the law since the age of 11. On the third anniversary of Michael's death, Lennon was sentenced to life in prison, with additional years for the other offenses.
During the sentencing, the courtroom was filled with the voices of Michael's family and friends, who painted a picture of a vibrant and caring young man. They spoke of his love for skateboarding and his dedication to mentoring at-risk youth. His sister remembered him as 'the dreamer of the family,' and his brother described him as a 'bright joy to everyone around him.' The community continues to mourn the loss of a talented individual who was a son, brother, uncle, and friend to many, and who, they later learned, would have also been a father.
