In the evening hours of February 17, 2022, a burst of rapid gunfire shattered the night near Victory Boulevard and Freedom Avenue in Portsmouth, Virginia. When the echoes of the violence faded, 25-year-old Rayquan Malik Gray, a Black male known to his loved ones as 'Big Ray,' had been fatally wounded.
Around 7:30 p.m. that same evening, Portsmouth police were called to a local hospital after a report of a person arriving with a gunshot wound. That individual was Rayquan Malik Gray, who was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival. The investigation quickly led officers to the area near the Rivers casino site, where they discovered a significant crime scene. The ground was littered with at least 38 evidence markers, a grim testament to the intensity of the attack.
Despite the extensive amount of evidence collected at the scene, the investigation into the death of Rayquan Malik Gray has been met with challenges. In the immediate aftermath and in the time that has passed, authorities have not publicly identified any suspects in connection with the shooting. No arrests have been made, leaving a community and a grieving family searching for answers and justice for a life cut short by gunfire.
