In the spring of 2022, the life of 17-year-old Samiyah Yellardy, a Black female, was tragically cut short in her own home in Richmond, Virginia. On the night of April 10, while her mother was out of town, an intruder broke into their apartment on Afton Avenue. Samiyah was shot in the stairwell and died at the scene. The incident, which occurred just before 2:30 a.m., is being investigated as a homicide.
Friends and family were left devastated by the sudden and violent loss of the George Wythe High School student, who was affectionately known as 'Mimy' or 'Mimezzy'.
Samiyah was remembered by her mother, Akeyia Pernell, as a unique and bright individual with a love for her family and friends. She was known for her good manners, outgoing personality, and sense of humor. With aspirations of becoming a pediatrician, Samiyah was a good student who loved children. In the wake of her daughter's death, Pernell has been a vocal advocate for justice, regularly communicating with detectives and the media to keep Samiyah's story alive. Hundreds gathered at a vigil held at her high school to honor her memory, releasing purple and silver balloons.
Despite the ongoing investigation, no arrests have been made in connection with Samiyah Yellardy's murder. Her mother has expressed immense frustration with the lack of progress in the case, feeling as though the police have moved on. In the years following the shooting, the case remains unsolved, with no new updates being shared with the public. A memorial bench created by a community artist to honor Samiyah was reported missing in August of a subsequent year, adding to the family's pain. Akeyia Pernell continues her fight for justice, vowing to never stop seeking answers for her daughter.
