In the early morning hours of April 27, 2023, the life of 26-year-old Kwanasia Keisha Clark was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire in Richmond, Virginia. The incident unfolded around 2:20 a.m. in the 2200 block of Halifax Avenue, near a neighborhood playground in the Oak Grove area. Richmond Police were called to the scene following reports of a shooting and discovered a chaotic situation with three women having been shot.
Kwanasia, a Black female, was pronounced dead at the
scene, having suffered a fatal gunshot wound. Two other women were also injured in the shooting, though their injuries were not considered life-threatening. One of the injured women was transported to a local hospital for medical attention, while the other declined treatment at the scene. Family members later revealed that Kwanasia was shot while attempting to defend a male friend who was involved in an altercation.
In the wake of the shooting, a large crowd gathered at the scene, and further altercations reportedly broke out even after police had arrived. The investigation into the triple shooting led to the arrest of 23-year-old Destiny Conway of Richmond. Conway was charged with two counts of malicious wounding and two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. At the time of her arrest, authorities indicated that additional charges were pending as the investigation continued.
Kwanasia Clark was remembered by her loved ones as a devoted mother to her three young children—two daughters and a son, all under the age of eight. She worked in customer service and as a security guard at group homes, and was known for her willingness to help others. Her family described her as a loyal friend and sister with a comforting spirit. Her violent death compounded the family's grief, as they had recently lost their grandmother, and the father of her older children had also been a victim of gun violence.
