In the evening hours of April 24, 2022, the life of 20-year-old D’Manuel Carlyle Banks of Newport News, Virginia, was tragically cut short. A Black/African American male, Banks was fatally wounded in a shooting that unfolded near the intersection of Chestnut Avenue and 34th Street. First responders from the Newport News Police Department were dispatched to the scene at approximately 7:39 p.m.
following reports of gunfire in the area.
Upon their arrival, officers did not locate a victim at the immediate scene of the shooting. They were later notified that an individual, subsequently identified as D'Manuel Carlyle Banks, had been transported to a local hospital in a private vehicle with life-threatening injuries. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Banks succumbed to his wounds at the hospital.
The Newport News Police Department initiated a homicide investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. To date, authorities have not publicly identified any suspects in connection with the death of D'Manuel Carlyle Banks. No arrests have been made in the case, and the investigation remains ongoing. Law enforcement officials have appealed to the public for any information that might lead to a breakthrough in the case and bring closure to the family of the young victim.
