In the late summer of 2019, the life of a promising young man, Luis Lou Eduardo Zambrana, was tragically cut short. At the age of 20, the male Newport News resident was shot and killed on Monday, September 16, 2019. Friends and family remember him as a goofy, fun-loving, and kind-hearted individual with a passion for theater, singing, and acting. He had briefly attended Norfolk State University and worked at a local grocery store and as a musician at his church.
The fatal encounter
occurred inside an Exxon gas station on Jefferson Avenue. Surveillance footage from the store showed Zambrana standing in line when a man approached him from behind and shot him twice at point-blank range. Zambrana died at the scene. The incident left his family and the community in shock and mourning, struggling to understand the senseless act of violence that took the life of a beloved son, brother, and friend.
The investigation into Zambrana's death quickly led to a suspect, 21-year-old Elijah Dayron Armstrong of Newport News. In a surprising turn of events, Armstrong's own father, after seeing his son's picture in news reports, brought him to the Newport News Sheriff's Office to turn himself in on the evening of the shooting. Armstrong was subsequently charged with first-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony in connection with Zambrana's death.
Authorities also linked Armstrong to another homicide that occurred on the same day in the nearby city of Hampton. Just 35 minutes after the shooting of Zambrana, Armstrong was allegedly the passenger in a rideshare vehicle when he shot and killed the driver, 38-year-old Lamar French. French was found in the parking lot of Phoebus High School. Investigators stated that there was no indication that Armstrong and French knew each other prior to the incident. Armstrong is being held in the Newport News City Jail.
