In the summer of 2022, a tragic event unfolded in Portsmouth, Virginia, forever altering the lives of several families. On June 7th, 30-year-old Georgio Devontae Lee was inside a house on Maple Avenue when gunfire erupted. The violent outburst resulted in a quadruple shooting, claiming the lives of Lee and three other individuals: Samuel Jones, Oleisha Mears, and Ashley Merricks.
The victims were reportedly asleep when the shooting occurred.
In the aftermath of the shooting, an investigation led to the arrest of two cousins, Raymond and Antwann Gore, who were subsequently charged with the murders. The cases against both men, however, did not result in convictions. In January 2023, a jury found Raymond Gore not guilty on all charges. Later that year, in November, the charges against his cousin, Antwann Gore, were dismissed. The dismissal was attributed to insufficient evidence and a lack of credible witnesses.
The prosecution's case was significantly dependent on the testimony of a witness whose reliability was brought into question during the legal proceedings. The witness's inconsistent statements and changing recollections weakened the case against Antwann Gore, ultimately leading to the dismissal of the charges. The lack of convictions has been a source of profound frustration and grief for the victims' families. Georgio Lee's sister, Shecora Lee, has been an outspoken advocate for her brother and the other victims, expressing her desire for answers and justice. She has been critical of how the case was handled and has urged anyone with information to come forward. Despite the legal outcomes, she remains determined to find justice for her brother.
