In the early morning hours of October 8, 2022, the life of 23-year-old Richard Tony-Naszell Bell Jr., a Black male, was tragically cut short in Newport News, Virginia. Police responded to a call of gunshots in the first block of Colony Square just after 2 a.m. Upon their arrival, they discovered Richard on the ground, suffering from a fatal gunshot wound.
Despite immediate medical attention, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Richard, born on September 27, 1999, was a 2017 graduate of Denbigh High School and an employee at Subway. He was remembered by loved ones for his warm smile, kind heart, and his love for music and gaming. He was a caring son and brother who enjoyed spending time with his family. With his best friend, he co-founded a group called 'Love Hurts,' a reflection of his compassionate nature.
The investigation into Richard's death led to a significant development a couple of months later. On December 19, 2022, authorities arrested Diarus Chamblee in connection with the homicide. Chamblee was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and multiple weapons offenses.
While an arrest has been made, the Newport News Police Department has indicated that the investigation remains active. They have publicly stated that they are seeking information regarding other individuals who may have been involved in the incident. The case is not yet considered fully closed as authorities continue to piece together the events of that fatal morning, seeking complete justice for Richard and his grieving family and friends.
