In the early hours of December 3, 2022, the life of Gabriel Martinez, a 24-year-old active-duty Navy service member, was tragically cut short in Virginia Beach, Virginia. A native of San Antonio, Texas, Martinez was stationed at Naval Station Norfolk and was described by his family as the glue that held them together. On the night of his death, he had been celebrating the holiday season with fellow sailors at a squadron Christmas party.
Later that evening, Martinez was seen leaving the
Omega Bar. It is believed he may have been abducted from this location. Not long after, at approximately 2 a.m., Virginia Beach Police Department officers responded to reports of gunfire in the 5800 block of Pickering Street, about a mile from the bar. Upon their arrival, they discovered Martinez's body on the residential street; he had been fatally shot. Investigators believe he did not know the individuals who took his life.
The investigation into Gabriel Martinez's murder remains ongoing, and as of late 2023, no arrests have been made, leaving his family searching for answers. The Virginia Beach Police Department has released surveillance footage of two persons of interest and the vehicle they were driving. One suspect was seen wearing a yellow puffer-style jacket with a hood, while the other wore a white jacket. They were operating a red Kia Soul, which was observed in the parking lot of the Omega Bar and at the scene of the crime. Authorities have urged the public to come forward with any information that might lead to the apprehension of those responsible for the death of the young sailor. A combined reward of up to $10,000 is being offered for information that leads to an arrest in the case.
