In the summer of 1979, the life of a dedicated public servant was tragically cut short on the streets of Newark, New Jersey. Joseph A. Pocchio, a 29-year-old male, served his community as an officer with the Essex County Park Police Department. On Saturday, August 4, 1979, what began as a routine traffic stop escalated into a fatal encounter that would leave a lasting scar on the community and the law enforcement fraternity.
That evening, Officer Pocchio was on patrol in Branch Brook
Park when he observed a vehicle speeding. He initiated a traffic stop, unaware of the dangerous individuals he was about to confront. Inside the car were three people who had just committed a robbery at a nearby candy store, making them desperate to evade capture. As Officer Pocchio was speaking with the 16-year-old driver in his patrol car, a 34-year-old passenger exited the vehicle, approached Officer Pocchio's car, and opened fire. The shots were fatal, and Officer Pocchio, a man who had served his country as a United States Marine Corps veteran in the Vietnam War, was killed in the line of duty.
The investigation into Officer Pocchio’s murder was swift and intensive. The three suspects fled the scene but were apprehended the very next day in New York City. The gunman, who senselessly took the life of a respected officer, was ultimately convicted of murder. He was sentenced to life in prison plus an additional ten years for his crimes. The tragic and untimely death of Officer Pocchio served as a stark reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers face daily and the ultimate sacrifice some make in their commitment to protecting and serving the public.
