In the afternoon hours of June 6, 2014, a burst of violence on a Newark street cut short the life of 33-year-old Kareem Jones. The male victim was in the vicinity of the 100 block of Muhammad Ali Avenue when gunfire erupted at approximately 2:40 p.m. Newark police officers, responding to reports of a shooting, discovered Jones at the scene suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
Emergency responders rushed him to University Hospital, but his injuries proved to be too severe.
A little over two and a half hours after the shooting, at 5:19 p.m., Kareem Jones was pronounced dead. The Essex County Prosecutor's Major Crimes Task Force, in conjunction with detectives from the Newark Police Department, immediately launched an investigation into the homicide.
In the initial stages of the investigation, authorities did not identify any suspects, and no immediate arrests were made in connection with the fatal shooting. The case remained an active investigation as law enforcement officials urged anyone with information to come forward to assist in bringing those responsible for Kareem Jones's death to justice.
