In the early morning hours of November 8, 2020, tragedy struck in Newark, New Jersey, forever altering the lives of those who knew Shahir Minatee. A Black male, just 17 years old, Minatee became another young life lost to gun violence. The incident unfolded around 4 a.m. on Elizabeth Avenue in the city's South Ward. Responding to reports of gunfire, police arrived at the scene to find the teenager suffering from gunshot wounds to his head. Despite immediate medical attention, his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the shooting was swift, leading to the arrest of a suspect who was also a minor. Authorities charged a 17-year-old resident of Newark with aggravated manslaughter and weapons offenses in connection with Minatee's death.
