On July 16, 2023, at approximately 6 p.m., Newark police responded to reports of a shooting on the 300 block of Springfield Avenue. Upon arrival, officers discovered 52-year-old Newark resident Lorenzo Boykins suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was immediately transported to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
