On the evening of October 7, 2019, the life of 27-year-old Faheem Muhammad, a Black/African American male from Newark, New Jersey, was tragically cut short. Just before 7:50 p.m., in the city's South Ward, the sound of multiple gunshots pierced the air near the intersection of Wainwright Street and Lyons Avenue. When police arrived at the scene, they discovered Muhammad's lifeless body.
He was officially pronounced dead a short time later at University Hospital.
A father of three young girls, Muhammad was the victim of a fatal shooting that left a community searching for answers. Investigators from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and the Newark Police Department secured the area to piece together the events that led to the homicide. In the immediate aftermath, law enforcement began an active search for the shooter, who had fled the scene and remained at large. No other individuals were reported to have been injured in the incident.
In the weeks that followed, the investigation continued, and authorities appealed to the public for assistance. On November 8, 2019, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office released surveillance images of a 'person of interest' they were seeking to identify and question in connection with the murder. The individual was last seen on video running north on Wainwright Street after the shooting. Despite this effort, there have been no public announcements of any arrests made in the case. The investigation into Faheem Muhammad's death is considered active and ongoing, but as of now, the person responsible for his murder has not been brought to justice.
