In the early evening of December 23, 2023, a tragic event unfolded on the border of Newark and East Orange, New Jersey, forever altering the lives of one family. Kareem Abdul Jarmon Guilford Jr., a 22-year-old male from East Orange, was fatally shot in the Vailsburg section of Newark. The incident occurred at approximately 6:13 p.m. on the 100 block of Mountainview Avenue, a location that would become the scene of a homicide investigation.
Newark police officers were dispatched to the
area following a report of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Guilford suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite the immediate response from law enforcement and emergency services, his injuries proved to be fatal. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:34 p.m., just over twenty minutes after the initial call was made.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force is leading the investigation into Guilford's death.
