In the early hours of a summer morning in Newark, New Jersey, the life of 24-year-old Shakime Peppers was tragically cut short. On June 20, 2015, the young man was outside his residence in the 300 block of 6th Avenue when he was fatally shot around 2:30 a.m. The incident initially left authorities without a clear motive or any immediate suspects, casting a shadow of uncertainty over the violent act that had taken place.
The narrative of what transpired that night began to unfold as the
investigation progressed. It was revealed that Peppers was sitting on his stoop with another individual when two men approached them with the intent to rob them. In an attempt to escape the perilous situation, Peppers tried to run away. It was during this desperate flight that he was shot in the back, a wound that would prove to be fatal.
Years after the incident, a measure of justice was served. In October 2018, a jury convicted Kevin Miller, then 27, of Newark, for his role in the deadly robbery. After six hours of deliberation, Miller was found guilty on charges of felony murder and robbery, among other counts. While one perpetrator was held accountable for the senseless death of Shakime Peppers, his accomplice in the crime was never identified, leaving a piece of the story unresolved. Miller was scheduled for sentencing in January of the following year, facing a minimum of 30 years in prison for his part in the robbery that ended a young man's life.
