In the summer of 2015, a tragedy unfolded in the streets of Jersey City that cut short the life of a young man. On the evening of July 22nd, 16-year-old Ronald Witherspoon, Jr. was found with a gunshot wound to his head near the intersection of Monticello and Belmont Avenues, just steps from his home. The young male was rushed to Jersey City Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries the following day.
In the wake of their profound loss, his family made the compassionate decision to donate his organs, a choice that ultimately helped save the lives of six individuals and stood to benefit many more.
The investigation into the death of Ronald Witherspoon, Jr. led to the identification of several suspects. In the days and weeks that followed the shooting, authorities announced a series of arrests. Three Jersey City residents, 24-year-old Naji McDuffy, 21-year-old Darius Emanuel, and 24-year-old Justin Nesmith, were taken into custody. All three faced serious charges, including murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and various weapons offenses.
As the investigation continued, two more individuals were implicated in the fatal shooting. The Hudson County Prosecutor's Office issued arrest warrants for 21-year-old Marquis Nicken and 18-year-old Dwayne Powell. They faced the same charges as the previously apprehended suspects: murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and unlawful possession of a firearm. Authorities considered them to be armed and dangerous.
