In the afternoon hours of December 10, 2020, tragedy struck in Jersey City when 35-year-old Niles Holmes, a male resident of the city, was fatally shot. The incident unfolded shortly after 4:15 p.m. near the intersection of Martin Luther King Drive and Wilkinson Avenue. First responders arrived at the scene to find Holmes unconscious and suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body. He was immediately transported to Jersey City Medical Center in critical condition.
Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he was pronounced dead at 6:12 p.m. The cause of his death was later determined to be a homicide resulting from the gunshot wounds.
As the investigation into the shooting began, a second victim, a 24-year-old man, was discovered nearby. He had sustained two graze wounds to his arm and was also taken to Jersey City Medical Center for treatment of his non-life-threatening injuries. The Hudson County Prosecutor's Office Homicide Unit, in conjunction with the Jersey City Police Department, launched a thorough investigation to piece together the events that led to the deadly encounter and to identify those responsible for the violence that had claimed one life and injured another.
The investigation led to a significant development on Christmas Eve, just two weeks after the shooting. Authorities arrested a 13-year-old girl in connection with the death of Niles Holmes. The teenage suspect, whose name has not been publicly released due to her age, was apprehended in the area of Union Street and Martin Luther King Drive. She has been charged as a juvenile with several serious offenses, including murder, aggravated assault, and multiple weapons-related crimes. The relationship, if any, between the young suspect and the victim has not been disclosed by law enforcement officials as the case proceeds through the juvenile justice system.
