On the evening of Sunday, April 7, 2024, a burst of gunfire shattered the night in the Jersey City Heights neighborhood, leaving a young man's life tragically cut short. Freddie Posey, a 25-year-old male from Jersey City, was fatally wounded in a triple shooting that erupted near the intersection of Central Avenue and Bowers Street around 9 p.m. When police arrived at the scene, they discovered Posey and a 30-year-old woman with gunshot wounds.
Both were rushed to Jersey City Medical Center, where Posey was pronounced dead shortly after 9:30 p.m. The female victim was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. A third victim, a 24-year-old male, also from Jersey City, independently sought treatment at University Hospital in Newark for a non-life-threatening injury.
The violence reportedly stemmed from an argument that had taken place at a party in a dance studio earlier that evening. The dispute escalated, spilling out into the street with deadly consequences for Posey. The investigation that followed led law enforcement on a multi-state search for those responsible for the shooting. In the months that followed, three individuals were identified and apprehended in connection with the homicide.
The first arrest came on April 24, 2024, when Aaliyah Rivera, 23, of Jersey City, was taken into custody by the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office Homicide Unit. Rivera faces charges of murder as an accomplice and conspiracy to commit murder. Subsequently, on June 23, Darren Esteves, 20, also of Jersey City, was apprehended in Orlando, Florida, by the local police department. He was charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and several weapons offenses. The third suspect, 21-year-old Freddie Castro of Union City, was arrested in Kissimmee, Florida, on July 11 by the U.S. Marshals Service. Castro faces a similar slate of charges, including murder and conspiracy. Both Esteves and Castro were awaiting extradition to New Jersey to face the charges against them.
