In the winter of 2018, the life of 18-year-old Angel Cruz was tragically cut short in his Jersey City home. On the evening of January 29th, police responded to reports of gunfire in the area of Rose Avenue around 9:35 p.m. Inside a residence, they discovered Cruz suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his torso. He was a male and a student at Lincoln High School.
Emergency services rushed him to the Jersey City Medical Center for treatment, but he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead in the early hours of January 30, 2018. The Regional Medical Examiner's Office later confirmed that the cause of death was gunshot wounds to his torso and extremities, ruling it a homicide.
The investigation into the shooting moved swiftly, and an arrest was made the very next day. Detectives from the Hudson County Prosecutor's Homicide Unit apprehended 19-year-old Kahsaun Bell of Roselle in connection with the killing. Further investigation revealed a chilling detail: Bell was an acquaintance of Cruz. In the time leading up to the fatal shooting, Bell had reportedly sent multiple texts and made several calls to Cruz, confirming his location before arriving at the Rose Avenue home. This suggested a targeted and premeditated act against his friend.
Kahsaun Bell was initially charged with murder and two weapons-related offenses. He was transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility following his arrest. In a later development, on April 16, 2018, Bell pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of aggravated manslaughter. Ultimately, a Superior Court judge sentenced the now 21-year-old Bell to 18 years in state prison for the killing of Angel Cruz. Under the terms of his sentence, he is required to serve a minimum of 15 years and 3 months before becoming eligible for parole.
