In the early morning hours of Saturday, March 27, 2010, a young man's life was abruptly ended on a Jersey City street in what authorities would describe as a 'premeditated attack.' Lamonte Wright, a 20-year-old male, was walking with his girlfriend to her car near the intersection of Clerk Street and Myrtle Avenue at approximately 6 a.m. when the tranquil morning was shattered by violence.
Without any preceding interaction or conversation, an assailant approached and fired a shotgun at close range, striking Wright in the back. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The brazen and senseless nature of the crime left both family and investigators searching for answers. Authorities quickly determined that robbery was not the motive, as nothing was taken from Wright. Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio characterized the killing as a targeted act, though a specific reason for the attack was not immediately clear. Wright's family remembered him as a 'good, honest man' who was not involved in gangs and was in the process of obtaining his license to work as a security guard in New York City. His aunt, Keisha Rosario, expressed the family's profound grief and shock, stating he was a trustworthy person who would often babysit her young son.
The investigation into Lamonte Wright's murder led to a significant development in April of that year. Authorities charged 19-year-old Shiquan Bellamy with Wright's murder. Bellamy was also implicated in a string of other violent crimes in Jersey City, having been charged with the killings of four other individuals in two separate incidents that occurred in February and April 2010. The charges painted a grim picture of a wave of violence, with Wright being one of the multiple victims whose lives were tragically cut short.
