In the winter of 2017, a burst of gunfire shattered the late afternoon peace at a housing complex in Newark, New Jersey, abruptly ending the life of 16-year-old Kevin Barber. A Black/African American male, Barber was one of four teenagers struck by bullets on January 11, 2017, in a violent altercation that unfolded at the John W. Hyatt Court complex on Hawkins Street. The incident, which occurred just after 5 p.m., was the tragic culmination of an ongoing dispute.
While three other youths, aged 15, 16, and 19, were also wounded in the quadruple shooting, Barber succumbed to his injuries.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office confirmed the fatal shooting, which sent ripples of shock and grief through the local community. At the scene, investigators found evidence markers and shell casings, painting a grim picture of the violence that had transpired. In the wake of the tragedy, Kevin Barber's grandfather, Herbert Waldron, voiced the family's profound sorrow and frustration with the persistent violence plaguing their neighborhood. The death of the young East Side High School student marked the first fatal shooting in Essex County for that year.
Authorities quickly identified a suspect in the shooting, 24-year-old Newark resident Raheem Rudd. A manhunt ensued, leading law enforcement to Atlanta, Georgia, where Rudd was apprehended in July 2017 through a coordinated effort between the FBI and the Atlanta Police Department. Rudd was subsequently charged with a litany of offenses, including murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and various weapons charges. His arrest brought a measure of relief to a community shaken by the senseless loss of a young life, as the case against him began to move through the justice system.
