In the morning hours of August 6, 2018, Godfrey J. Jones Jr., a 25-year-old male, was seated on a bench in Weequahic Park in Newark, New Jersey. He was in the company of a female companion when two men approached them. The encounter took a fatal turn when the men inquired about Jones's name, and before he could respond, one of them opened fire. The shooting occurred at approximately 9:15 a.m.
