On a Friday afternoon, March 31, 2017, in Newark, New Jersey, 16-year-old Malik Bullock, a male, was fatally shot. The incident occurred in the 400 block of Hawthorne Avenue shortly before 3 p.m. When law enforcement arrived, they found two teenagers with gunshot wounds. Bullock was pronounced dead at the scene. The second victim, a 17-year-old, was taken to a hospital and was in stable condition.
Bullock was a junior at the Barringer Academy of the Arts and Humanities.
An investigation by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office led to the arrest of a 17-year-old resident of Newark on Tuesday, April 4, 2017. The name of the suspect was not released because he was a juvenile. The charges brought against the suspect included murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault, and weapons-related offenses.
Due to the suspect's age, court proceedings were not public. The investigation into the shooting was reported to be ongoing. Ysmin Jones, the mother of Bullock's child, remembered him as a 'great father' who was very involved in his child's life.
