In the early hours of a Sunday morning in Newark, New Jersey, a dispute tragically cut short the lives of two brothers. Jose Castillo-Granados, a 25-year-old man, and his younger brother, Francisco Castillo-Granados, aged 22, were fatally shot on August 27, 2017. The brothers, originally from Honduras, were near the intersection of Adams and Walnut streets in the city's Ironbound section when the incident occurred.
Both men were rushed to a nearby hospital but were pronounced dead shortly after their arrival.
The investigation into the double homicide revealed that the shooting was not a random act of violence but rather an isolated incident stemming from a prior dispute. Authorities quickly identified a person of interest who was known to the brothers. This individual was Zabdiel R. Vargas-Soto, a 22-year-old resident of Newark. Detectives from the Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, which includes members of the Newark Police Department, took the lead in the investigation.
Following the gathering of evidence and witness statements, an arrest was made in connection with the killings. Zabdiel R. Vargas-Soto was taken into custody and faced serious charges for his alleged role in the deaths of the Castillo-Granados brothers. He was charged with two counts of murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a weapon. After his arrest, Vargas-Soto was held at the Essex County Correctional Facility in Newark. The Essex County Prosecutor's Office announced its intention to request that he be detained pending further legal proceedings.
