In May 2017, the life of Nateria 'Nae' Powell, a vibrant senior at Maury High School in Norfolk, Virginia, was tragically cut short. The young woman was fatally shot on Lead Street, an event that would ultimately be described as an accidental killing by her boyfriend, Lamontraye McAdams.
The immediate aftermath of the shooting led to an investigation and the arrest of McAdams. Initially, he faced a charge of second-degree murder for Powell's death.
However, the legal proceedings took a turn when he entered a guilty plea to the amended charge of involuntary manslaughter in February 2018. In addition to this, McAdams also pleaded guilty to reckless handling of a firearm resulting in serious injury and obstruction of justice.
In May 2018, a judge sentenced Lamontraye McAdams for his role in the death of his girlfriend. He received a 10-year sentence, with five of those years suspended. The sentence also included conditions of 10 years of good behavior and three years of supervised probation. Ultimately, McAdams was set to serve five years in prison for the shooting death of Nateria 'Nae' Powell.
