On a tragic evening in Norfolk, Virginia, the life of 42-year-old Detra R. Brown, a female certified nursing assistant, was cut short in an act of selfless bravery. On November 3, 2021, a mass shooting erupted in the Young Terrace community, stemming from a domestic dispute. Brown was not the initial target of the violence but was fatally wounded when she went to the aid of another individual who had been shot.
Her act of courage placed her in the path of a gunman who was indiscriminately firing upon a group of women.
The perpetrator of this senseless violence was 19-year-old Ziontay Brian Ricardo Palmer. The incident began when Palmer shot his then-pregnant 19-year-old girlfriend, Angel LeGrande. As others, including Detra Brown, rushed to help, Palmer continued to fire, killing three women and injuring two others. Along with Brown, Nicole Lovewine, age 45, and Sarah Costine, age 44, also lost their lives. The violent rampage was a devastating blow to the Norfolk community, leaving families heartbroken over the loss of their loved ones. In the hours following the shooting, as his girlfriend recovered in the hospital, she identified Palmer to investigators as the shooter. Shortly after being named a suspect, Palmer turned himself in to the police.
Ziontay Palmer was subsequently arrested and faced a series of serious charges for his crimes. In July 2023, a grand jury indicted him on three counts of aggravated murder, one count of malicious wounding, one count of aggravated malicious wounding, and multiple firearm charges. His trial took place in November 2023, and after approximately three and a half hours of deliberation, the jury found him guilty on all counts. The evidence presented during the trial painted a grim picture of the events that transpired, highlighting the devastating impact of Palmer's actions on the lives of the victims and their families.
In February 2024, Ziontay Palmer was sentenced for his role in the mass shooting that claimed the lives of three women and forever altered the lives of two others. A judge sentenced him to four life terms plus an additional 43 years in prison. The sentencing brought a measure of closure to the families of the victims, who had waited over two years for justice to be served. The conviction and lengthy sentence ensured that Palmer would be held accountable for the immense pain and loss he inflicted upon the Young Terrace community.
