In the late hours of a Saturday in Newark, New Jersey, the life of 33-year-old Raheem Hughee of East Orange was tragically cut short. On June 28, 2014, police responded to a call on Mountainview Avenue, where they found Hughee deceased from multiple gunshot wounds. The incident was one of two unrelated fatal shootings that occurred in the city that same day.
The investigation into the shooting death of the male victim was a joint effort between the Newark Police Department and the Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force. Their work led to a significant development in the case less than a month later.
On July 17, 2014, authorities announced the arrests of two individuals in connection with the murder of Raheem Hughee.
Eighteen-year-old Kaseem Callender of Newark and an unnamed 17-year-old juvenile were taken into custody. Callender was subsequently held at the Essex County Correctional Facility on a $500,000 bail. In the wake of the violence, the Essex County Sheriff's Crime Stoppers offered a $10,000 reward for information that would lead to an arrest in the case.
