On Christmas Day in 2023, a day typically filled with joy and celebration, the city of Newark was rocked by a violent and tragic event. Ridge Scott Jr., a 34-year-old man, was brutally gunned down in a brazen daytime shooting that unfolded on the 300 block of Clinton Avenue. The incident, which occurred around 1:30 p.m., left the community in shock and mourning. Eyewitnesses reported a chaotic scene involving two vehicles, from which a heavy-set male suspect emerged and opened fire on the vehicle occupied by Scott.
First responders arrived to a harrowing sight: Ridge Scott Jr. was discovered inside a burning vehicle that had crashed during the violent exchange of gunfire. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was rushed to University Hospital in a desperate attempt to save his life. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival at 2:01 p.m.
The lone suspect was seen fleeing the scene on foot, heading westbound on Clinton Avenue, disappearing into the city and leaving a trail of questions and a family devastated by their sudden loss.
For months, the investigation into the death of Ridge Scott Jr. continued, a painful period of uncertainty for his loved ones and the community. The Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force diligently pursued leads in the case. Their persistence ultimately led to a breakthrough. In March 2024, authorities arrested 44-year-old Marcus Sorbino in connection with the fatal Christmas Day shooting. Sorbino's capture on South 14th Street brought an end to the manhunt and marked a significant development in the quest for justice for Ridge Scott Jr. Sorbino now faces charges for the murder and is being held at the Essex County Jail.
