On the night of June 10, 2023, a violent and tragic event unfolded on the 100 block of Shephard Avenue in Newark, New Jersey, resulting in the death of 33-year-old Isaiah Cobb. The incident, which shattered the quiet of the evening, stemmed from a deeply personal conflict that escalated to a fatal conclusion. Authorities identified the man responsible as 51-year-old Terrance Carroll of Newark.
The confrontation was the culmination of a love triangle involving Cobb, Carroll, and Carroll's wife.
Reports from the investigation indicate that Carroll had recently become aware of an extramarital relationship between his wife and Cobb, leading to escalating tensions. On that fateful Saturday night, around 11:30 p.m., Carroll confronted Cobb. Witnesses in the area reported hearing a loud argument just before the sound of gunfire erupted. Carroll allegedly shot Cobb while he was seated in the driver's side of his car. When police officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Cobb suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene just fifteen minutes later.
Following the shooting of Cobb, the tragedy continued to unfold as a murder-suicide. After allegedly killing Cobb, Terrance Carroll turned the gun on himself. He was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound and rushed to University Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries shortly after midnight. In addition to the two fatalities, Carroll's wife was physically assaulted during the altercation. She sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital for evaluation.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force is leading the ongoing investigation into the murder-suicide. As the suspect took his own life, no arrests were made in connection with Isaiah Cobb's death. Authorities have encouraged anyone with additional information about the events leading up to the incident to come forward to assist with the investigation.
